Digital Eye Strain: Protecting Your Vision in the Screen-Time Era

By Dr. Rajeswari • Mon Jun 01 2026

With work, school, and entertainment increasingly happening on screens, digital eye strain has become one of the most common complaints we see at Crispr Eye Care — across every age group.

What is digital eye strain?

Digital eye strain (sometimes called computer vision syndrome) refers to the eye discomfort that develops after two or more hours of continuous screen use. Symptoms include dryness, burning, blurred vision, headaches, and neck or shoulder tension.

Why does it happen?

When focusing on a screen, people blink significantly less often than normal — sometimes by half. This reduced blinking leads to faster tear evaporation and dryness. Screen glare, poor lighting, and incorrect viewing distance add further strain.

The 20-20-20 Rule

A simple, evidence-backed habit: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This gives your focusing muscles a genuine break and helps restore normal blinking.

When to see an eye doctor

If discomfort persists despite taking regular breaks, it may indicate an underlying refractive error or dry eye condition that needs proper evaluation — not just more frequent breaks.
