Understanding Squint (Strabismus)
A squint, medically known as strabismus, is a condition where the eyes do not look in exactly the same direction at the same time. While one eye looks straight ahead, the other eye may turn inward, outward, upward, or downward.
Pediatric Squint & "Lazy Eye"
When a child develops a squint, the brain may begin to ignore the image from the turned eye to prevent double vision. If left untreated, this can lead to Amblyopia, commonly known as "lazy eye," causing permanent visual impairment. Early intervention is crucial. A squint will not simply "correct itself" as a child grows.
Treatment Pathways
Depending on the specific type and severity of the strabismus, treatment may include:
- Prescription Glasses: Often the first step, specifically for refractive squints.
- Patching Therapy: Covering the stronger eye to force the brain to use and strengthen the "lazy" eye.
- Eye Exercises (Orthoptics): To improve eye coordination and focus.
- Surgical Correction: A highly precise day-care procedure to adjust the tension of the eye muscles and restore proper alignment.
Adult Squint Correction
Adults can develop squints due to medical conditions (like diabetes or thyroid disease), trauma, or untreated childhood strabismus. Adult squint surgery is highly effective, not just for cosmetic reasons, but to eliminate double vision and alleviate severe eye strain.
