Glaucoma Myths vs. Facts: Separating Truth from Fear

By Dr. Rajeswari • Fri Jun 12 2026

Glaucoma is widely misunderstood, partly because it progresses silently. Let’s address some of the most common myths we hear from patients.

Myth: I would know if I had glaucoma

Fact: The most common form of glaucoma typically causes no pain and no noticeable symptoms until significant, often irreversible, vision loss has already occurred. This is exactly why routine eye pressure checks matter, even when vision feels normal.

Myth: Glaucoma only affects elderly people

Fact: While risk increases with age, glaucoma can occur at any age, including in younger adults and even children in rare congenital forms. Family history and certain medical conditions raise risk regardless of age.

Myth: If I have good vision, my eye pressure must be fine

Fact: Visual acuity (how clearly you see) and intraocular pressure are not directly linked in early glaucoma. You can have 20/20 vision and still have dangerously elevated eye pressure silently damaging your optic nerve.

Myth: Glaucoma treatment will restore my vision

Fact: Vision already lost to glaucoma cannot be recovered. Treatment — drops, laser, or surgery — is aimed entirely at preserving the vision you currently have and preventing further loss.

Myth: Once treated, I don’t need further checkups

Fact: Glaucoma is a chronic condition requiring ongoing monitoring, even after treatment begins, to ensure eye pressure remains controlled over time.
