Monsoon Eye Care: Protecting Your Eyes During Chennai's Rainy Season
By Dr. Rajeswari • Fri Jun 05 2026
Chennai’s monsoon season brings welcome relief from the heat, but also a rise in eye infections and irritation. A few precautions can help protect your vision during these months.
Common monsoon eye problems
Increased humidity and standing water create ideal conditions for bacterial and viral conjunctivitis (“pink eye”), styes, and fungal infections, especially for contact lens wearers.
Practical precautions
- Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes after being out in the rain
- Wash your hands frequently, especially before touching your eyes
- Avoid sharing towels, pillows, or eye makeup during this season
- Contact lens wearers should be especially diligent about lens hygiene, or consider switching to glasses temporarily during peak monsoon weeks
When to seek care
Redness, discharge, persistent itching, or sensitivity to light that doesn’t improve within a day or two should be evaluated promptly — some monsoon-related infections can spread quickly between household members if untreated.
A note for contact lens wearers
Splashing or swimming in rainwater while wearing contact lenses significantly raises infection risk. If your lenses get exposed to rainwater, remove and clean them properly before reinserting, or discard if they are daily disposables.
